Why Instagram Isn’t a Replacement for a Small Business Website

Instagram is useful for discovery and engagement, but it does not reach every customer equally. Learn why a professional website should remain the hub of a small business’s online presence.

Instagram can be a valuable marketing channel for a small business. It can showcase work, help people discover the business and keep customers connected to what is happening.

But Instagram is not a replacement for a business website.

A social profile gives your business a presence inside someone else’s platform. A website gives customers a dedicated place to understand what you do, find the information they need and decide what to do next.

Instagram is important, but it does not reach everyone

Recent Canadian research shows why relying on Instagram alone can leave part of your market behind.

The Angus Reid Institute reported in April 2026 that 75% of Canadians aged 18–34 use Instagram weekly or more, compared with 36% of Canadians aged 55 and older. Overall, 52% of Canadian adults reported using Instagram weekly or more.

The study surveyed 1,812 Canadian adults from March 2–6, 2026. The sample was weighted to represent Canadian adults by region, gender, age, household income and education.

Instagram reaches age groups differently. Angus Reid Institute reported weekly-or-more Instagram use of 75% among Canadians aged 18–34 and 36% among Canadians aged 55+ in 2026.

That audience gap can matter to a small business

If your customers span several generations, the people following your Instagram account are not necessarily representative of everyone who may want to buy from you.

The same Angus Reid data shows a clear age difference among women. Weekly-or-more Instagram use was 81% among women aged 18–34, 57% among women aged 35–54 and 40% among women aged 55+.

That can matter for businesses such as salons, professional services, home services, health-related services, restaurants and local retailers where established customers may be spread across a wide age range.

For businesses serving women across multiple age groups, Instagram can be useful for discovery without reaching every potential customer equally.

Social media is a marketing channel. Your website is your business hub

Instagram is designed around a feed. Your website is designed around your business.

That distinction matters when a prospective customer is trying to answer practical questions such as:

  • What services do you offer?
  • Where are you located or what areas do you serve?
  • How can I contact you?
  • Can I request a quote or book an appointment?
  • What should I expect before I buy?
  • What experience, reviews or proof can I see?

A properly structured website can put those answers in predictable places instead of asking customers to search through posts, highlights, captions or direct messages.

A website gives customers a clearer path to take action

Social media is often useful near the discovery stage. Someone sees a photo, watches a video, recognizes the business name or receives a recommendation from a friend.

When that person becomes more serious, a website can give them a clearer next step. Depending on the business, that might be requesting a quote, booking an appointment, calling, viewing services, comparing options or reading detailed information.

The goal is not to move away from Instagram. It is to make sure Instagram has somewhere useful to send interested customers.

Your website can also be found outside social media

People do not all start their research on Instagram. Many begin with a search engine because they are looking for a specific product, service or local business.

A business website gives search engines pages they can crawl and understand. Clear service pages, useful content, location information and a sound technical structure can all support search visibility.

That does not guarantee rankings, traffic or leads. It does give the business a search-friendly foundation that an Instagram-only presence cannot provide in the same way.

Your website is an online asset you control

Social platforms can change their algorithms, layouts, features, account policies and reach. Businesses have to adapt to those changes because the platform controls the environment.

A website gives the business much more control over its brand, structure, content and customer journey.

That does not mean a website is independent of every outside service. Websites still rely on domains, hosting, search engines and other technology. The difference is that your business is not confined to one social network’s feed or profile format.

Instagram and your website should work together

For many businesses, the strongest approach is not website versus Instagram. It is website and Instagram, with each doing a different job.

  • Instagram: visual discovery, updates, community and engagement.
  • Website: services, trust, detailed information, search visibility and conversion paths.

Your Instagram bio can point people to your website. Your website can display or link to your social channels. Campaigns and posts can send traffic to specific service or landing pages when customers need more information.

This creates a more complete online presence without requiring either channel to do everything.

Signs your business may be relying too heavily on Instagram

Instagram may be carrying too much of your online presence if:

  • customers regularly have to DM you for basic business information
  • your services or pricing approach are difficult to understand without scrolling through posts
  • you do not have dedicated pages that explain important services
  • people cannot easily request a quote or contact you outside social media
  • your business has little or no presence when someone searches Google
  • your social profile is being used as the only place customers can validate the business

If the website itself is old or no longer reflects the business, see when a small business should replace an old website.

What should the website do that Instagram cannot?

A small business website does not need to be complicated. It needs to make the business easy to understand and easy to contact.

Depending on the business, that can include service pages, location or service-area information, reviews, project examples, staff information, FAQs, quote forms, booking links, pricing guidance, policies and useful resources.

The website should also work properly on mobile devices, load reliably and have a clear technical foundation behind it.

That is also where a fully managed website can be useful for a small business that does not want to manage hosting, security, backups and technical maintenance itself.

So, does your business still need a website if you have Instagram?

For most established small businesses, yes.

Instagram can be an excellent part of your marketing, but customers should not have to use Instagram to understand your business.

A professional website gives you a central online home that works across age groups, supports search visibility and gives prospective customers a clearer path from research to action.

Social media can help people discover your business. Your website should help them choose it.

Frequently asked questions

Can Instagram replace a website for a small business?

Instagram can support discovery, engagement and visual marketing, but it does not provide the same control, search structure or organized business information as a dedicated website.

Do customers still use business websites?

Yes. A website gives customers a direct place to research services, contact the business, request a quote, book, compare options and confirm important business information without requiring a social-media account.

Should I stop using Instagram once I have a website?

No. For many businesses, Instagram and the website work best together. Social media can support discovery and engagement while the website handles deeper information, search visibility and customer actions.

Does having a website help with Google?

A well-structured website gives search engines content they can crawl and understand. It can provide a stronger search foundation, although specific rankings, traffic and leads cannot be guaranteed.

What should I put on my website if my Instagram already shows my work?

Use the website for structured information such as services, locations, contact options, quote or booking paths, reviews, FAQs, business information and detailed content that would be difficult to organize in a social feed.
